Curt Thompson, Chair of the Gwinnett County Democratic Party has issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s recent remarks targeting Somali Americans and Rep. Ilhan Omar:
“Donald Trump’s comments attacking Somalis and Rep. Ilhan Omar are unacceptable, dangerous, and fundamentally un-American. These remarks do not simply target individuals, they vilify entire communities who are essential to the fabric of our state and our nation.
“Somali Americans make extraordinary contributions to Georgia and to the country. They are entrepreneurs, educators, medical professionals, public servants, and community leaders who strengthen our economy, enrich our culture, and help build a more prosperous future for all of us.
“Rep. Ilhan Omar, like every elected representative, has the right to advocate for her constituents without being subjected to racist or xenophobic attacks. Efforts to demean her based on her heritage or identity undermine the core principles of democratic representation.
“We must reject rhetoric that seeks to divide, dehumanize, or endanger our neighbors. Donald Trump is unfairly ‘othering’ Somalis for not fitting a narrow vision of America.
“At a time when leadership should be bringing us together, comments like these only inflame hatred. We stand firmly for inclusion, truth, and the dignity and respect every person deserves.”
