Statement on Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month
(GWINNETT COUNTY) – The Gwinnett County Democratic Party condemns the climate of fear that has silenced Mexican Independence Day celebrations across the United States. According to recent reports, families in cities like Chicago and Los Angeles canceled parades, postponed festivals, or chose to stay home rather than risk visibility in the wake of ICE raids and intensified immigration enforcement. What should be a time of joy and pride has instead become a moment of anxiety and silence.

When families are forced to hide their traditions, when children are made to fear waving a flag or shouting ¡Viva México!, we all lose something fundamental: the freedom to live with dignity and celebrate openly. Mexican Independence Day and Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a holiday—it is a living expression of resilience, heritage, and identity. To suppress these celebrations is to erode not only cultural pride but also the core values of freedom and justice.

Here in Gwinnett County—one of the most diverse counties in Georgia—we know the richness that our immigrant neighbors bring. Mexican, Central American and immigrant communities strengthen our economy, enrich our culture, and embody the promise of America. The forced silence of these communities by the Trump administration and Georgia Republicans is not just an attack on them—it is an attack on our shared democracy.

The Gwinnett County Democratic Party reaffirms our commitment to fight for policies that protect immigrant families, safeguard cultural expression, and ensure no one has to choose between pride in their identity and personal safety. We will not allow fear to erase tradition. We stand in solidarity with all those whose voices have been quieted, and we will continue working toward a county and a country where diversity is celebrated, not threatened.

El Partido Demócrata del Condado de Gwinnett condena el clima de miedo que ha silenciado las celebraciones del Día de la Independencia de México en los Estados Unidos. Según informes recientes, en ciudades como Chicago y Los Ángeles se cancelaron desfiles, se pospusieron festivales o las familias decidieron quedarse en casa en lugar de correr el riesgo de hacerse visibles ante las redadas del ICE y el aumento de la aplicación de leyes migratorias. Lo que debería ser un tiempo de alegría y orgullo se ha convertido en un momento de ansiedad y silencio.

Cuando las familias se ven obligadas a esconder sus tradiciones, cuando los niños sienten miedo de agitar una bandera o de gritar ¡Viva México!, todos perdemos algo fundamental: la libertad de vivir con dignidad y celebrar abiertamente. El Día de la Independencia de México y el Mes de la Herencia Hispana son mucho más que festividades—son expresiones vivas de resiliencia, herencia e identidad. Suprimir estas celebraciones no solo erosiona el orgullo cultural, sino también los valores centrales de libertad y justicia.

Aquí en el Condado de Gwinnett—uno de los más diversos de Georgia—sabemos la riqueza que nuestros vecinos inmigrantes aportan. Las comunidades mexicanas, centroamericanas e inmigrantes fortalecen nuestra economía, enriquecen nuestra cultura y encarnan la promesa de Estados Unidos. El silencio forzado de estas comunidades por parte de la administración Trump y los republicanos de Georgia no es solo un ataque contra ellos—es un ataque contra nuestra democracia compartida.

El Partido Demócrata del Condado de Gwinnett reafirma nuestro compromiso de luchar por políticas que protejan a las familias inmigrantes, salvaguarden la expresión cultural y aseguren que nadie tenga que elegir entre el orgullo en su identidad y su seguridad personal. No permitiremos que el miedo borre la tradición. Nos solidarizamos con todos aquellos cuyas voces han sido silenciadas, y seguiremos trabajando por un condado y un país donde la diversidad sea celebrada, no amenazada
